Purasu Ichi Blog

I started a blog, the sole purpose of which is to write about RPGs, Purasu Ichi [+1] Blog. I write about what games I'm playing, what I'm looking forward to, post plenty of pictures with my entries, and basically give commentary as I play all different kinds of RPGs.

We Fight For Our Friends and We Can't Give Up

Ugh. I absolutely hate it in JRPGs when you've collected all 4, 5, or 7 mystic artifacts only to have them taken by either the enemy or by your benefactor in some betrayal subplot. Especially in the betrayal subplot, when the betrayer is being killed by the true enemy, the JRPG hero is like, "We can't just let them get killed like that. We'll save them," and then you save them, only to have to expend more resources to further stop them from their evil intent. True, it would be noble to save someone who deserves saving, but to save someone who you are trying to defeat in the first place... What shines through to me is not heroic goodness. It's naive idiocy. When you die facing this traitor later, blame the ruin of the Universe itself on nothing but your own retarded idealism. Even though I enjoy JRPGs, I wish they more often took on the more serious tone of WRPGs. Sometimes they do, and I rather enjoy that. I mean, a bit of light-heartedness is fine. In fact, this tone is part of why some people prefer JRPGs. But ugh.

final fantasy + xbox 360 games?

The post below reminded me of this.

I wouldn't be surprised if most (or all, who knows?) of you are familiar with Final Fantasy 13. Is anyone buying it on release? I'm just curious, as I've never seen a series that attracts so many people, even with little information about it.

For example, a friend of mine has had both the 360 and ps3 version on preorder since it was possible to put an order in, which was months ago. Have they bothered with previews? No, they don't believe they're accurate. Good reviews from someone whose played the Japanese release? Nope! Are they buying the game (twice) based on the fact it's Final Fantasy? You bet! Bear in mind that buying both copies of the game will set them back £80. Even then, that's assuming they didn't buy the collector's edition...which they may have done, because it's Final Fantasy and the collector's edition is worth it! Interestingly, my friend isn't a fanboy of the series in the slightest.

This series blows my mind - I can only imagine how much profit they're gonna make from people insta-ordering, considering they (allegedly) sold a million copies on release day. Considering each cost around Y5000 (I believe), that's a lot.

...As a kind of aside, any recommendations for 360 rpgs of any origin? I'm...mildly worried I may have exhausted the rpg library for it. ): I've played the big-name ones (basically, everything Squeenix released, the Bethesda games, Tales, Fable...), but are there some hidden gems I'm not aware of? Finding older games at my local store is kind of awkward, considering it's about 9 parts Gears of War/Halo to anything else. :L

recommendations

I hope I'm in the right place for this, and not doing something completely shun-worthy, but the comm's profile does say 'recommendations' so... ;[
but if I am in the wrong, don't hesitate to delete this, sorryyy...

I've been scouring every game store in my city for the past week, looking for a new RPG, but I've come up with nothing! D:
Well, at least not based on the box info alone, because I know that boxes can be very deceiving. :P

And so, I implore you gamers to intelligently and non-fangirlishly, as that is not what the community stands for (;p), convince me of why your favorite rpg deserves to be bought..! :D
and I'll tag this 'recommendations', so that other hopeless newbs can be referred to this post in the future. :)

Personally, I'm admittedly a Final Fantasy whore and like RPGs along those lines (FFX, Shadow Hearts I, and FFIX are probably my overall top three-- I know I know, I'm trying to broaden my horizons here D;), and I'm not a big fan of 'realism' in my games-- the school and social aspect of Persona always got on my nerves, tbh.
and I'm also a total sucker for good graphics, 'cause I'm shallow like that.
PS2 is my preferred console, but I can work with PS3 or PSP.

BUT rec whatever you want!, even if it doesn't fit that criteria at all; I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a post tagged for that very purpose.. or is it? again, feel free to delete this, if so. xD

Introduction

So! An introduction post, yes. I'm Teg, I'm new to this community, and as you can probably guess, I deeply enjoy RPGs (along with other games, yes, but that's immaterial). I'm a JRPG fan more than a WRPG fan, for various reasons--have a listing of my favorites behind the cut:

the rest's under hereCollapse )

luzerna

an adventurer is you!

Hello, I am Lu, I play games, I'm younger than anyone else who's posted an introduction about themselves so far, and I got Dragon Age for Christmas which I have been playing almost non-stop. Which brings me to the actual topic of this post.

snip for lengthCollapse )

Either way, the point is, I'm curious. It seems to me that most players of WRPGs stick to one personality more or less for any game--whether it's an idealistic pseudo-pacifist like myself or a complete sociopath. Who do you play? Why do you think you stick to that kind of character in particular? For people who can't answer because they don't play enough to know, is this sort of thing why they can't hold your attention? Do you think that this ultimately makes the game more immersive or not?

RPGs for Christmas, Anyone?

I've been on LiveJournal since 2002, and I've noticed that a common trend in LiveJournal communities is that they observe a spark of activity and then die off for whatever reason. For those of you that enjoy having this community and want to make it something, let's be aware of that.

I fear that with all the "official" topics, members are hesitant to post anything unofficial. Perhaps using the term official was counterproductive. I don't know. Maybe no one has time for RPGs over the holidays.

Like I posted before, my girlfriend and I have four PS2 RPGs to play (Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories, Xenosaga I and II, and Mana Khemia) thanks to the Christmas season, so we'll be busy with that.

We started Chain of Memories but barely. How was everyone's Christmas?

Official Discussion Topic II: RPG Cliches and Conventions

Si señor, it's that time again. Official Discussion Topic II is at hand. Don't jump me for posting twice in such an amount of time.

ODT II: RPG Cliches and Conventions

This is mostly going to be a topic for the JRPG crowd, as frankly, JRPGs are a thousand times more cliche than WRPGs. The characters and stories are more archetypal. The situations are more easily expected. It's just the reality of it. But that's not to say that WRPGs don't have their own conventions; for one, the medieval fantasy setting is a big one in and of itself. So don't be shy.

Let's make a rule: One comment per convention/cliche, all discussion of that convention/cliche underneath, such as whether its a good one or a bad one. Perhaps this ODT will grow into a long list of amusing cliches and opinions about them.

Feel free to post as many as you like. Come back, post more.

Interesting article

Definitely thought that this article would be a good discussion topic for the community:

Bioware on the Decline of the JRPG.

I've already posted up my thoughts in several places, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.
